EXPLORE QATAR: Souq Waqif

Nestled in the heart of Doha’s Al Souq district, Souq Waqif is a must-visit for anyone looking to experience traditional Qatari architecture and culture. This historic market, which dates back to at least the early 20th century, is more than just a shopping destination. It’s a cultural and historical hub that perfectly blends the past with the present. Whether you’re a local or a tourist, you can’t visit Qatar without stepping into Souq Waqif!

My First Visit to Souq Waqif

In my almost six years living in Qatar, Souq Waqif has become one of the most iconic spots in the country. Located centrally, it’s accessible to both locals and tourists alike. The first time I visited Souq Waqif was back in 2016. It was during a carnival festival, and I went with my colleagues to explore. At 20 years old, I was the youngest in the group, and everyone treated me like a little sibling! I’ll never forget the parade that took place later that afternoon. The weather was perfect for exploring, and we even walked there from our workplace.(Disclaimer: Sorry for the low-quality photos from that time!)

 A Changing Perspective

In my first year here, I found myself overwhelmed by work stress and focused so much on saving that I didn’t make time to explore. I thought traveling was an unnecessary expense, but as I grew older, my views changed. I realized that making memories and having experiences is far more valuable than simply saving money. Now, I allocate a portion of my budget each month to explore Qatar. Whether it’s a simple day trip to Souq Waqif or a weekend getaway, I make sure to enjoy life and unwind.

The Charm of Souq Waqif

When you step into Souq Waqif, you’re immediately transported to a different time. The traditional architecture evokes the past, and yet, the place has evolved to offer modern amenities to its visitors. Renovated in 2016, Souq Waqif has managed to maintain its historical charm while upgrading its facilities. Historically, the souq was a trading post for Bedouins (nomads of the Arabian and Syrian deserts), and it continues to reflect this heritage today.

Despite visiting the souq multiple times, I still feel the same excitement every time I go back. The history of the country is so beautifully represented here, and I always leave with a sense of appreciation for Qatar’s rich cultural heritage.

Here are some highlights from Souq Waqif that you shouldn’t miss:

  1. Souq Waqif Well & Dove Sightseeing

Located right at the entrance of Souq Waqif, the well is a peaceful spot where you’ll often see flocks of birds. It’s one of the most iconic spots for photos. You can even buy feed from nearby pet shops to attract more birds and make the experience even more enjoyable.

  1. Souq Waqif Art Center

If you’re a fan of art, make sure to visit the Souq Waqif Art Center. Artists here sell their pieces, and you can even commission personalized portraits or custom artworks. However, do note that it follows a specific schedule, so plan your visit accordingly. The last time I visited in 2017, I got to see some amazing artworks!

  1. Souq Waqif Pet Shop

While I was excited to visit the pet shop at first, I couldn’t help but feel concerned when I saw the animals caged up. The shop houses various animals like cats, puppies, birds, and turtles. While I hope the conditions improve, it was a bittersweet visit for me.

One of Souq Waqif’s most iconic landmarks is Le Pouce or “The Thumb,” a monumental sculpture by French artist César Baldaccini. Installed in 2019, it commemorates Qatar’s greatest sporting achievement. Located at the heart of the souq, it’s a must-see during your visit.
